Welcome to Santorini, Greece

The best known of the Cycladic Islands, Santorini owes its stunning beauty to its volcanic origins. Linked to the Lost City of Atlantis and one of the largest volcanic eruptions known to man, Santorini boasts one of the most spectacular landscapes in the world. The western side of the island has spectacular views from villages built on steep cliff-tops around the caldera. The towering cliffs that plunge dramatically into the shimmering blue sea will leave visitors with unforgettable memories. Photographers and artists from around the world come here to capture the natural beauty and magic of Santorini.

Travel to Santorini

Santorini Travel

Santorini has an airport at Kamari village with regular flights from Athens, other islands and some charter flights from European cities. A flight from Athens to Santorini is about 30 minutes. Transport from the airport consists of buses to Kamari and Thira, where passengers change to buses for other towns. Taxis are also available.

Ferries from Athens and other islands arrive at the port of Athinios (the new port), where buses and taxis meet each arrival to transport passengers up a very steep, winding road to Thira, Oia, Kamari and other locations. It is recommended to use the high-speed catamarans which take 4.5hrs from Pireaus to Santorini. Older and larger ferries take up to 10 hours and stop at many ports on the way.

Cruise Ships arrive at the old port which is at the bottom of the cliff from the main town of Thira. Passengers are ferried to the port in boats where they can either take the cable car to reach the town of Fira, ride a donkey which climbs up a winding path or walk the path. It is recommended to use the cable car to go up and walk down the path.

Bus services are the main mode of transport between villages and beaches. The main bus depot is at Thira where buses depart for locations all over the islands. Cars and motor scooters can be rented on the island.

Santorini Attractions

Santorini Travel Guide

The main attraction is the grandeur of the dramatic and stunning views from the rim of the caldera on the western side of the island. Thira, the main cliff-top town, is located at 900 feet above the Aegean Sea on the edge of the caldera overlooking one of the most spectacular landscapes in the world. One of the most popular experiences is to explore along the maze of pathways past hotels and cafes while enjoying the incredible view. The cable car or winding track takes visitors down to the old port where you can take an excursion to the volcano or a luxury catamaran cruise. Also in Thira, near the cable car station, is the Archeological Museum.

From Thira, walking along a path for twenty minutes will bring you to the village of Imerovigli which has magnificent views of the islands unique landscape and seascape.

The village of Oia is located at the western end of the island and is famous for its spectacular views and artisan shops. At dusk, the village of Oia attracts crowds of people exploring narrow pathways, taking photos and waiting to see the famous Santorini sunset.

Kamari beach, on the eastern side of the island, is a volcanic black pebble beach not great for swimming or sunbathing. This beach resort is similar to other Greek Islands and popular with families. Kamari hotel accommodation usually offers larger rooms than Thira hotels and most hotels have pools to make up for the rocky beach.
